Gait Analysis Basics: What Running Form Feedback Should Focus On

A practical introduction to cadence, step symmetry, overstriding, fatigue changes, and the limits of visual gait feedback.


Gait analysis is often presented as if there is one perfect running form. In practice, useful feedback is more modest. It looks for patterns that may affect efficiency, comfort, or consistency: cadence, step symmetry, overstriding, vertical bounce, and how form changes with fatigue.

A visual gait screen is not a medical diagnosis. It is a way to decide what to observe, practice, or refer out when needed.

Cadence

Cadence is steps per minute. Many recreational runners overstride at low cadences, landing far in front of the body. A slightly higher cadence can reduce braking forces for some runners, but the goal is not to force everyone to one magic number.

Small changes work best. If a runner normally uses 156 steps per minute, jumping to 180 immediately may feel unnatural. A 5 percent increase is often more realistic.

Overstriding

Overstriding usually means the foot lands too far ahead of the center of mass. It can increase braking and make each step feel heavier. From the side view, look at where the foot contacts relative to the body and whether the runner reaches forward aggressively.

The cue is often not land on the forefoot. Many runners do fine with a heel strike. The more useful cue is land closer under you or slightly increase cadence.

Symmetry

No runner is perfectly symmetrical. The question is whether one side consistently behaves differently: longer ground contact, visible hip drop, uneven arm swing, or a repeated shift. Symmetry changes under fatigue can also be informative.

If asymmetry is new, painful, or worsening, the runner should reduce training stress and consider a professional assessment.

Fatigue Changes

Form at minute two may look different from form at minute twenty. That change matters. A runner may start with good rhythm and later show overstriding, trunk rotation, or collapsing posture. Feedback should consider when the pattern appears.

What to Do With Feedback

Choose one cue at a time: slightly increase cadence, shorten stride, relax shoulders, or reduce bounce. Practice it during short easy runs first. Do not overhaul form during a hard workout or race week.

Running form changes add stress because tissues experience load differently. Make small changes and give the body time to adapt.
