Carbyne Lab exists to make expert-level fitness coaching accessible to everyone. We believe that effective training should not be limited by geography, language, or budget. Our platform combines artificial intelligence with proven exercise science to deliver personalized guidance that was once available only to elite athletes and their professional coaching staffs.
The fitness industry is filled with generic workout templates, one-size-fits-all meal plans, and apps that simply count reps without understanding whether you are performing exercises correctly. We set out to build something fundamentally different: a training companion that watches how you move, understands your nutritional habits, tracks your progress over time, and adapts to help you reach your goals faster and more safely.
Whether you are a first-time gym goer learning the basics of a barbell squat, an experienced lifter fine-tuning your deadlift lockout, or a personal trainer managing a roster of clients across multiple time zones, Carbyne Lab is designed to meet you where you are and help you get where you want to go.
Brian Chang, IFPA Master Personal Trainer
Brian Chang leads the fitness education and coaching direction behind Carbyne Lab's public content. He writes and reviews the site's training, movement, and nutrition-tracking articles with an emphasis on practical application, clear scope, and responsible coaching guidance.
View author profileOur exercise library contains over 240 movements spanning strength training, hypertrophy, power development, mobility, and rehabilitation. Each exercise is categorized by muscle group, equipment requirement, and difficulty level. The library covers everything from foundational compound lifts like squats, bench presses, and rows to specialized isolation work, plyometrics, and corrective exercises. Trainers can assign any exercise from the library when building programs for their clients.
This is the feature that sets Carbyne Lab apart from every other fitness app on the market. Using your device camera, our AI-powered motion analysis system watches your movements in real time and provides instant feedback on your form. The system currently supports squat analysis, deadlift analysis, push-up tracking, pull-up counting, and full gait analysis for walking and running patterns. All video processing happens directly on your device, meaning your camera feed never leaves your phone or computer. Your privacy is fully preserved while you get the kind of form feedback that normally requires an in-person coach standing right next to you.
Log every set, rep, and weight for each exercise. Organize your training into structured cycles and weeks so you can follow periodized programs with clear progression. Track rest times between sets, monitor estimated calorie burn including both active calories and EPOC afterburn, and review your workout history to identify trends. The system supports training cycles with named weeks, making it easy to follow block periodization, daily undulating periodization, or any other programming methodology your coach prescribes.
Track your daily food intake with detailed macronutrient breakdowns covering calories, protein, carbohydrates, and fats. Log meals with photo attachments so your trainer can review what you are eating. Group meals by time of day and track your nutritional consistency over weeks and months. Whether your goal is building muscle, losing fat, or improving athletic performance, having accurate nutrition data alongside your training data gives you and your coach the complete picture needed to make informed adjustments.
Record body weight, body fat percentage, and other key measurements over time. Take and store progress photos locally on your device using IndexedDB, which means your private photos never get uploaded to any external server. Compare photos side by side across different dates to visualize your physical transformation. This combination of objective metrics and visual evidence helps you stay motivated and gives your trainer the data they need to adjust your program.
For personal trainers, Carbyne Lab provides a full-featured dashboard to manage your clients. View each trainee's workout history, nutrition logs, body metrics, and progress. Build and assign customized training programs using our exercise library. Send messages and feedback directly through the app. The trainer-trainee model is built into the core of Carbyne Lab, meaning trainers can operate on behalf of their clients to log workouts, adjust programs, and review data, all from a single interface.
Not sure what program to follow? Our AI program generator can create customized training plans based on your goals, available equipment, training experience, and schedule. Choose from over 300 pre-built program templates or let the AI design something specifically for you. Programs are structured with proper periodization, progressive overload, and balanced muscle group targeting.
Communicate directly with your trainer or trainees through our built-in messaging system. Ask questions about your program, share updates about how a workout felt, discuss nutrition adjustments, or coordinate scheduling. All messages stay within the platform, so you do not need to juggle between multiple apps to manage your coaching relationship.
Carbyne Lab is built as a progressive web application using Next.js, which means it works seamlessly in your browser on any device while also being installable on your home screen for an app-like experience. There is no need to download anything from an app store. Simply visit the site, add it to your home screen, and you have a full-featured training app with offline capabilities.
Our backend runs on Supabase, providing enterprise-grade PostgreSQL database storage with row-level security policies that ensure your data is only accessible to you and your authorized trainer. The application is deployed on Cloudflare Workers, delivering fast load times from edge servers around the world regardless of where you are located.
The AI motion analysis system uses browser-based computer vision models that prioritize privacy-preserving analysis on-device where possible. When you enable camera-based form checking, joint positions are analyzed frame by frame to evaluate movement quality, depth, symmetry, and tempo. No raw camera footage is used as a general-purpose publishing feed, and motion-analysis features are scoped to training feedback inside the product. This architecture reflects our effort to balance practical coaching feedback with privacy and clear product boundaries.
The platform is fully bilingual, supporting both English and Traditional Chinese interfaces. Every screen, label, notification, and piece of guidance can be displayed in either language. This makes Carbyne Lab accessible to a wide range of users and enables trainers to work with clients who prefer different languages.
Most fitness apps fall into one of two categories: simple rep counters that do not offer any coaching intelligence, or expensive platforms that lock essential features behind high monthly fees. Carbyne Lab offers a generous free tier that includes full workout tracking, nutrition logging, body metrics, and access to the AI motion analysis system. Premium tiers add trainer management, advanced analytics, and expanded program generation.
The name Carbyne refers to a theoretical carbon allotrope that would be the strongest material ever discovered, stronger than diamond and graphene. We chose this name because it represents what we want for our users: the pursuit of becoming the strongest version of yourself, built on a foundation of science, technology, and disciplined training.
We are a small, dedicated team of engineers and fitness professionals who use the app ourselves every day. Brian Chang leads the coaching and editorial side, while the product team builds the software and measurement systems that support that guidance. That real-world testing keeps us focused on what actually matters: helping people train smarter, track their progress honestly, and build lasting fitness habits.
