How accurate is a 1RM estimate?

A calculator is most useful when the input set is recent, technically consistent, and between 3 and 10 reps. Very high-rep sets are less reliable because conditioning and pain tolerance start to affect the result more than maximal strength.

Why use a training max?

A training max is usually 85-90% of your estimated true max. It gives you room to build volume and repeat quality reps instead of programming every week around the most aggressive number possible.

When should you retest?

Retest after a block of consistent training, not after every good session. If your technique changes, your range of motion shortens, or your RPE judgment is inconsistent, keep the estimate conservative.
